Jean Barbara Shirley was born June 1, 1920, in Brooklyn, New York, to Michael F. and Maud J. (Muir) Nugent. She grew up in Upper Montclair, New Jersey. While on a trip to Bermuda she met William E. Shirley (Slim), whom she married two years later in 1942. She moved to Bermuda where she spent the war as Assistant to the Admiral in charge of the U.S. Navy stationed at Somers Point.

After the war Jean and Slim moved to Philadelphia where Slim attended the University of Pennsylvania. They then moved to Riverton, New Jersey, where she raised her family. She enjoyed bridge and she and Slim were avid golfers. To Slim's chagrin she had six holes in one before he had his first! Jean was the secretary to the U.S. Senior Women's Golf Association. She was an active golfer until the age of 91.
Jean is survived by her children: Barbara (Bobby) Bear (Mack Pexton) of Bozeman, Montana; Anthea (Tony) Shirley (Carl Griebel) of Claiborne, Maryland; and William E. (Bill) Shirley, Jr. (Susan) of West Chester, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren: Kaitlin Bear (Zachery Hesse) of Denver, Colorado; Alec Bear of Brooklyn, New York; Christopher (Chris) Shirley of E. Norriton, Pennsylvania; and Donielle Johnson (Scott) of Downingtown, Pennsylvania; and four great-grandchildren: Juniper Hesse-Bear; and Taylor, Troy and Tatum Johnson.
Private services will be held in Bermuda at a later date.
