Jean Scott Hale "Jiffy"

Born Jan. 22, 1930, in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, died peacefully on Feb. 27, 2015, in Bozeman, Montana.

Jiffy attended school in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, and completed high school at Radnor High in Wayne, Pennsylvania. She also attended Taylor Business School in Philadelphia. She met and married Charles W. Hale, Jr. "Chick" in Wayne, Pennsylvania, in June of 1950. They were married for 65 years before Chick preceded her passing on Oct. 22, 2014.

Jiffy and Chick were 46ers, having hiked, with their four children, most of the Adirondack peaks and traversed the Northville-Lake Placid Trail in both summer and winter. She bred and trained German Shepherds for track and field, worked in local doctor offices as a secretary and as a nurse, and was an office manager for the family general contracting business, Wolfe and Hale, for 50 plus years. Jean and Chick moved from Wayne to a small horse farm just outside Saint Peters Village, Pennsylvania, in 1975. Jiffy bred horses and competed in 50 and 100 mile endurance races, and operated a woolen shop from their house. While in Saint Peters, Jiffy and Chick also enjoyed fox hunting and buggy driving.

Jiffy and Chick retired to Gallatin Gateway, Montana, in 1992, and lived an outdoor life of horseback riding and serving as officers in the Montana Back Country Horseman Association. Jiffy published and edited the Back Country Horseman newsletter.

Jiffy is survived by her four children, Robert (Sandra), Barbara Hamilton (James), Stephen (Marilyn), and Thomas (Pamela); five granddaughters and two great-granddaughters; and her brother, Bill Scott.
