Jerry Lee Smith of Three Forks passed away Dec. 28th, 2010, after an eight-year battle with myxoid liposarcoma, a rare form of cancer. He fought a good fight.

Jerry was born Jan. 12, 1945, in Bozeman to Lloyd & Sarah Smith. He grew up in McAllister, Mont. and played, fished, hunted, trapped and explored the Meadow Creek area he loved so much.

Jerry graduated from Ennis High School in 1963. That same year he met Roberta Roberts of Whitehall. They were married June 14, 1965, just celebrating 45 wonderful years together.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in December 1964, and was stationed in Munich, Germany, as a welder. Roberta joined him and they spent two and a half years living in Munich and traveling Europe. Returning they purchased the Texaco Station in Norris. Their two daughters Shannon and Kelly were born while there. They then moved to Bozeman, where he worked for Dorn Equipment Company as a mechanic, and from Bozeman to Hilltop Farms in Three Forks, where he worked for Fred and Chuck Kamp. He loved farming. He helped out the Folkvord family for many years.

His final job was back in Norris as service manager for A.M. Welles. He loved the drive from Three Forks to Norris every morning when the sun came up on his beautiful mountains.

He could fix anything and loved helping others. Just a call from the Lane's, Cooper's, or Mark at M & W Machine and he was out the door to help.

He also loved the PBR Bull Riding and church with the riders. They traveled to North Carolina, Washington, Idaho, Billings, and to Las Vegas to watch the bulls.

He was a wonderful husband, father and friend but he was a fabulous Papa to his four very special grandchildren. He loved being with them. Fishing with Saryna at the ponds, bike riding with Joshua and Emmalee and four-wheeling with Alexander were three of his favorite things. We could go on and on but we know he is free from pain and is in the loving hands of God.

He is survived by his wife Roberta; daughters, Shannon (Todd) Lester of Belgrade and Kelly Smith of Three Forks; Grandchildren Joshua, Emmalee and Alexander Lester of Belgrade, Saryna Smith of Three Forks. His parents; brother Sunny (Jan) Smith of Cameron; sister Sally (Jim) Staiger of California. Nieces & nephews, Corrie (Bobby) Wood, Jenny Butler, Brian Smith, Adam Staiger, and Trevor Staiger. Aunt Mable Straub and many cousins and great friends, including special friend Lonnie Lane.

A celebration of Jerry's life will be Saturday, Jan. 8th, 2011, at 10 a.m. at K&L Mortuary in Three Forks, bring your stories of Jerry. Honorary Pallbearers are Joe Reynolds, George Mathisen, Clair Hecock, Lynn Nordahl, Chuck Ansley, Van Schmidt, Mark Oelke, and Jack Sauther. Cremation has taken place.

Memorials maybe made to Three Forks Summer Recreation Program, Three Forks Trail System or the charity of your choice.
