Jessie Lucas, 93, of Manhattan passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2009. She was born on Feb. 19, 1916, in Manhattan, to Jake and Hattie (Ungersma) Lucas. She was the eldest of five children. While growing up in Manhattan, she attended Vincent Elementary School.

After completing her schooling, she worked as a retail sales clerk at the Montgomery Ward store in Bozeman for three years and later at the Amsterdam Grocery Store from 1949 until her retirement in 1997.

Jessie was a lifetime member of Manhattan Christian Reformed Church. She was active in her Bible study group and sang in the choir. She belonged to the Dorcas Guild. Jessie enjoyed canning, baking, and giving home goods to others.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jake and Hattie Lucas; brothers, Gerald and Henry Lucas; sister, Theresa Veltkamp; sister-in-law, Tina Lucas; brother-in-law, Steve Veltkamp; and nephew, Dennis Lucas.

She is survived by her brother, Harold Lucas of Manhattan; sister-in-law, Pauline Lucas of Bozeman; nephews: Ronald (Janet) Veltkamp of Anchorage, Alaska; Lee (Sharon) Veltkamp of Portage, Mich.; Janice (Clarence) Dykman of Vancouver, Wash.; Clifford (Karen) Veltkamp of Bellflower, Calif.; Glenn (Seanne) Veltkamp of Stevenson, Wash.; Dan (Teri) Veltkamp of La Miranda, Calif.; Karen (Bill) Veltkamp of Portland, Ore.; Helen (Stan) Herringa of Lynden, Wash.; Jay (Bonnie) Lucas of Sandpoint, Idaho; Sandi (Dan) Hintz of Gresham, Ore.; Cheri (Allen) Hiatt of Sandpoint, Idaho; Marsha (Rick) Lance of Grangeville, Idaho; Jerry (Melodie) Lucas of Grangeville, Idaho; numerous cousins, and great-nieces and -nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at Manhattan Christian Reformed Church, with interment at 1 p.m. at Hills Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 31, at Dokken-Nelson Funeral Chapel, and at noon Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Fellowship Hall. Reception to follow at the Fellowship Hall.
