Joan "Joanie" Lillian (Brett) Faris died Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, Minn.

Funeral services for Joanie will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, at Bowman United Methodist Church in Bowman, N.D. Pastor Val Rush will officiate, with burial to follow in Bowman Cemetery. A Family and Friends service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Krebsbach Funeral Home Chapel.
Joan Lillian Brett was born March 13, 1947, in Moorhead, Minn., to Milton and Virginia (Saul) Brett. Joanie grew up in Fargo, N.D., and graduated from Fargo Central High School. She then worked at Black's Department Store.
Joanie met Gary Faris when he worked for Milton Brett Trucking. They dated for two years before they were married Oct. 26, 1969, in St. Marks Lutheran Church in Fargo, N.D.
Gary then enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Pirmasens, Germany, where their daughter, Jennine, was born on March 9, 1971, in Landstuhl, Germany.
Gary and Joanie returned to the states in 1972 and moved to McKinney, Texas, where their son, Kenny, was born on Feb. 6, 1975. Joanie and Gary relocated to Montana, where Gary worked for the U.S. Post Office in Billings, Jordan, and Gardiner. Gary retired in 2000, and they moved to Burlington, N.D., where Joanie worked for JC Penny's for five years.
In May 2007 Joanie was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, and over Memorial Day weekend 2008 they moved to Deer Creek, Minn.
Joanie and Gary were part of the Dakota Cruisers Car Club in Minot, N.D. Joanie enjoyed traveling to visit family, including a yearly camping trip to visit Jennine's family in the Rocky Mountains, spending time with her children and grandchildren, many different crafts, and genealogy.
Joanie fought a courageous battle with brain cancer.
She is survived by her daughter, Jennine and husband, Ken Cook and children, Kenny, Kalvin, Jessica, and Julia of Bozeman; her son, Kenny and expectant wife, Kristin Faris of Burlington, N.D.; brother, James Brett of Wisconsin, Robert (Sharon) Brett of Rochert, Minn.; twin sister, Janice (Martin) Johnson of Moorhead, Minn.; and sister, Judy (Doug) Smith of Fargo, N.D., mother-in-law, Marie Faris of Bowman, N.D.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Gary; her mother, Virginia; her father, Milton; and brothers, David Allen and baby boy, Brett.
Krebsbach Funeral Service of Bowman, N.D., is in charge of arrangements.
