Joyce M. Graham passed away on Jan. 16, 2014. She was born on March 2, 1929, in Laurel to Virgil Olen and Ivah M. Marsh. She graduated from Columbus High School and attended the University of Montana.
She married James P. "Jim" Graham on Sept. 10, 1949, in Columbus. After they married, they moved to Missoula, where Jim played basketball for the Grizzlies and finished his education at the U of M. Jim entered the U.S. Army in 1951, and they traveled to California, Maryland, and Georgia while he served in the Counter Intelligence Corp. They returned home to Montana in 1954.
In August 1955, they purchased their first home in Big Timber after Jim had accepted a teaching-coaching position with Sweet Grass County High School.
Jim and Joyce raised their three children Jim, Jay, & Kathy in Big Timber. After the children finished high school, Joyce worked at Triangle Telephone, Sweet Grass County Treasurer Office and Sweet Grass Hospital, helping her children through college. Joyce was dedicated to her children and grandchildren, and she was their number one fan. She never missed a ball game or school event and always felt that her children were her biggest accomplishments. Her happiest times were spent in the bleachers watching her children and grandchildren play ball or coach. She was so proud of each of them and encouraged them to do their best and be happy at whatever they were doing.
Joyce spent many years as a member of the Big Timber Jaycees, and was a Montana state president. She was active in the American Legion Auxiliary and her Homeland Circle... She cherished the friendships and memories made during these years.
Joyce is a member of the First Congregational Church in Big Timber; she enjoyed her volunteer work at the museum, senior center, church, and spending time with her many friends.
Joyce is survived by her three children, Jim (Karen) Graham of Chester, Jay Graham of Big Timber, and Kathy (Jim) Ullman of Bozeman; grandchildren Jeff (Megan), Jamie (Jeremy), Joshua, Rebecca, Megan and Mitchell; six great-grandchildren, and her brother-in-law Jim Chaffee of Grand Junction, Colo. She was preceded in death by her husband Jim, her sister JoAnn Chaffee of Colorado, and her parents.
Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2014 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Big Timber, a reception will follow at the American Legion Post #19.
