Karen Arlene Fassler of Aloha, Oregon passed away unexpectedly on September 3, 2015, one week before her 49th wedding anniversary. Born Karen Arlene Smerker on May 22, 1947 to Pauline Potter and Albert Smerker of Pueblo, Colorado, Karen was a graduate of Pueblo Catholic High School and Southern Colorado State College (now CSU – Pueblo) where she met Dave Fassler, her husband. Karen was actively involved in education, working as a special education teaching assistant and in educational support roles until her retirement in 2007. Karen and Dave traveled extensively throughout the U.S. with their at-home son Joal, visiting 45 states and meeting ten governors. Additionally, Karen enjoyed crocheting, gardening and cooking for her family.

Karen is survived by her husband, Dave; daughter Barb Kooima and husband Scott of Moses Lake, Washington; Son David II and wife Brianna Havir of Mendota Heights, Minnesota; Karla Myatt and husband David of Forest Grove, Oregon; son Joal; and grandchildren Kylla and Makenzie Kooima, Saed, Dessarae and Jonah Myatt, and Marley Fassler.
A memorial was held on Saturday at St. Cecelia's Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Special Olympics of Washington County, Meals on Wheels of Beaverton, or the Oregon Food Bank.
