Louis Albert Smith, 85, died peacefully surrounded by family, on Sunday, May 8, 2016, in Bozeman, Montana. Louis was also known as Smitty, Chano, Chaney, Lou, Louie and Uncle Smitty by family and friends.

Louis was born May 25, 1930, in San Diego, California, to Louis Native Smith and Frieda Johanna (Dauel) Smith. He grew up in Old Town San Diego and attended Fremont Elementary School, Pacific Beach Junior High School and San Diego High School. He enlisted in the Army with the 82nd Airborne Paratroopers. He retired from San Diego Gas & Electric Company after 32 years of service and moved to Bozeman, Montana. Louis has ancestry which dates back to the first U.S. flag that was hung in Old Town, San Diego, California, in 1846 by his great-grandfather, Albert Benjamin Smith.
Louis is survived by his wife, Gwen Smith, of 42 years; his sister, Isabel (Smith) Ricard of San Diego, California, two daughters from his first marriage, Norena Wesely of San Diego, California, and Deborah Laramore of Belgrade, Montana; step-daughter, Susan Cunningham of Washington State; and step-son, Alan Webb of Kansas. He is preceded in death by his beloved mother, Frieda J. Smith; father, Louis N. Smith; sister, Ruby Romero; and brother, Carl Smith. He leaves behind six nieces and nephews, nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Visitation will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service, 113 S. Willson Ave., Bozeman, MT. Interment will take place at the Alpine Cemetery in Alpine, California, on Friday, May 20, 2016, at 11 a.m. A celebration of life will follow at his daughter's home in Lakeside, CA.
