Mac Johnson

Be the first to share your memories or express your condolences in the Guest Book for Mac Johnson.

Mac J. Johnson went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, Nov. 30, 2015. Mac was born on Jan. 5, 1928, in Ririe, Idaho, the son of Hairl and Helen (McBride) Johnson.

Before his high school years, he moved to Lewistown, Montana, and graduated from Fergus County High School. He was very athletic and participated in many varsity sports. Mac enlisted in the U.S. Navy after World War II. Following a two year Naval stint, he began his formal college education at MSU and graduated from Eastern MT College in Billings with a BA in Elementary Education, later receiving his Masters in Education.

While at Eastern, he met the "Love of His Life" Shirley Arline, from Lindsay, Montana. They were married in Glendive, Montana, on Aug. 18, 1951. A devoted husband and provider, Mac began his teaching career of nineteen years at Ronan, Montana. Moving to Big Sandy, Montana, he was an elementary principal, teacher and coach. Mac is most remembered as the great sixth grade math teacher of Willson Middle School in Bozeman.

In 1980-83, Mac received his Masters of Biblical Studies at Dallas Theological Seminary. His first charge as pastor was in Salmon, Idaho, then at Lustre Bible Church, then Grace Bible Church as a visitation pastor.

Life for Mac was very full! He was a constant witness for Christ, an avid fisherman, a big game hunter, and life-long rock collector. He enjoyed gardening, hiking, and wonderful times with his family, and camping in the great outdoors. Mac's family was very much his top priority along with being a testimony and servant to those around him and shepherding the flock God had entrusted to him.

Mac is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley, of 64 years and their family; Andrea (Mark) King of Three Forks, Mark (Kay) Johnson of Bozeman, Sybil (Clint) Steadman of Belgrade and Kathryn (Stephen) Ovenell of Cashmere, Washington; grandchildren, Justin (Lisa) King, Seth King, Joel King, Cec (Jennie) Johnson, Tori (Kyle) Detrick, Kaila (Jacob) Passey, Brandon (Kristen) Steadman, Anna Ovenell, Mac (Mikaela) Ovenell, Stan (Kayla) Ovenell, and Nick Ovenell; sister, LaVelle French of Billings; half-brother and sister, Jerry and Linda Johnson; and nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mac was preceded in death by his parents, and his older brother, Calvin Johnson.

A wonderful Saint in the Lord, Mac will be greatly missed by his family and friends. For Mac, "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord" and that his "joy is now complete!"

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4 at Grace Bible Church in Bozeman. Interment has taken place in Meadow View Cemetery in Manhattan.

Arrangements are in the care of Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service.
