Niki Nelson passed away peacefully on Oct. 19, 2010, at Fern Lodge in Castro Valley, Calif. Niki was born in Bozeman, an only child, to Elizabeth and Howard Nelson.

She graduated from Gallatin County High School in 1957, where she played the flute in the band and orchestra. She attended Montana State University, and like her mother, was active in the Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority. She also attended Principia College in Illinois and graduated college with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education. Upon receiving her teaching credential, she moved to California, following her family to the land of opportunity.

Niki became a teacher in the public school system in Hayward, Calif., where she worked for 30 years at Bret Harte Junior High and Mount Eden High Schools. Her primary subjects were home economics, art and history. Along with music, these were her primary areas of interest.

She was a volunteer at her church, First Church of Christ Scientist, serving on the music committee, as a Sunday school teacher, a pianist and usher. She was also an accomplished flutist.

She will be dearly missed by her family, which included her aunts, Margo Roberts of Hayward, Calif., and Martha Hutchison of Reno, Nev.; and many cousins and several close friends.

Donations may be made in the name of Niki Nelson to Castro Valley Music Parents Society, P.O. Box 2146, Castro Valley, CA 94546.
