Peggy Durham McLeod passed on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009.

She was born on the family ranch in Harrison on June 7, 1924, to Charlie and Mercy Chapman Durham. As an only child, Peggy was very loved - she was her father's "son" and her mother's daughter and worked hard all during her early years. She later regaled her children and grandchildren with stories of ranch life - rattlesnakes in the chicken coop, kittens in the haystacks and sleigh rides to winter card parties.

She attended school in Harrison - a proud salutatorian! She graduated from MSU in 1945 with a degree in home economics and English.

Peggy married Gordon McLeod of Norris in 1945, and in their 64 years together raised five children and lived in Bozeman, Chicago, Michigan, New Jersey and later returned to retire in Bozeman. They traveled extensively - to pre-Castro Cuba, throughout the U.S., Europe, Australia, China, Ireland, South America and many family trips to Montana. In later years, Peggy and Gordon lived and worked in a variety of locations through the International Executive Service Corp, including Bangladesh, Egypt and Ecuador.

Peggy's career led her from the teaching profession (substitute teaching when her children were young, high school home economics, food preparation at a vocational school, middle school English) to finding her second "calling" as an activities director/occupational therapist at the Lenawee County Home in Michigan and also at the Princeton, N.J., nursing home.

She found Princeton especially fascinating and enjoyed hearing the stories of Einstein's contemporaries!

Peggy was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church, former president of AAUW and an active member of PEO (where she relished awarding educational scholarships to worthy women). She was a member of many bridge groups and cherished her friends and activities. Most recently, Peggy lived at the Bozeman Lodge and enjoyed day trips, bridge and activities there.

Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon (May 6, 2009).

She is survived by her children, Katie (Scott) Harvey of Gallatin Gateway, Gordon (Mary Jo) McLeod of New Jersey, Douglas McLeod of Denver, Rodney McLeod of Butte, and Gregory (Vickie) McLeod of Kansas. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Hayden, Fletcher, Ruth, Andrea, and Eduarda.

Our dear Mother and Granny was lively and loving to us all up until the end.

We will miss her greatly and cherish our memories.

If anyone so wishes, memorials could be made to the First United Presbyterian Church of Bozeman, or to a charity of one's choice.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at First United Presbyterian Church of Bozeman. Reception will follow. Interment will be at a later date.
