PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- Robert "Bob" Edgar Olsen of Gallatin Gateway passed away Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, in Palm Springs, Calif., while visiting his son.

Bob was born to William "Willie" and Inga Olsen on Nov. 19, 1923, in Roy, Mont., the eighth of ten children. The family moved to a farm in Bridger Canyon in 1934, where Bob attended Upper Bridger Elementary School, and later graduated from Gallatin County High School.

In 1942 he leased land from the Flying D Ranch in Gallatin Gateway and ran a hay/cattle operation. He added the Mud Creek Ranch to his lease in 1944.

Bob met a local girl, Hazel Daniel, at a country dance, and they married in 1945. The couple farmed on the Flying D until 1956, when they bought a small farm west of Gallatin Gateway. Bob was a logging contractor until 1973, then began trucking. Upon retiring in 1991, he and Hazel bought an RV and enjoyed burning up the highway.

Bob loved Hazel and his kids, country music, cold beer and watching "Jeopardy." He was the toughest, kindest cowboy who ever waltzed across Texas.

Bob is survived by his wife, Hazel; sons, Gary (Lauri) Olsen of Bozeman, Dennis (Tawni) Olsen of Livingston, Kenneth (Eric) Olsen of Palm Springs, Calif., Bill (Jennifer) Olsen of Sahuarita, Ariz., Russ (Lauri) Olsen of Gallatin Gateway; and daughter, Debbie (Lance) Robinson of Phoenix, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. His brother, George Olsen of Vacaville, Calif., also survives.

A celebration of Bob's life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 3, at the Eagles' Lodge, 316 E. Main St., Bozeman.

Memorials may be made in Bob's name to the Willing Workers' Ladies Aid of Gallatin Gateway; to the Bozeman Eagles' Auxiliary; or to the donor's choice.
