Dr. Robert Glen Oakberg, Ph.D., passed away at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital on Saturday, June 15 from complications arising from viral meningoencephalitis.

Bob was born in Elko, Nev. on May 29, 1940 to Francis and Helen Oakberg (née Olmsted). He graduated from Coeur D'Alene High School in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho in 1958 and earned his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in civil engineering from Stanford University, where he played football for the Cardinal.

After earning his Ph.D., Bob worked at Boeing in Seattle before teaching at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., Bristol University in Bristol, England, and finally Montana State University in Bozeman. Bob taught at MSU for 34 years, retiring in 2011. While at MSU, he served on the Faculty Council and as the Faculty Athletics Representative.

Bob loved teaching, traveling, cooking, sampling wine, skiing, cycling, working out, and attending MSU Bobcat athletic events. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his wife, Bernice, his two sons, Thomas and Timothy, and his grandson, Cameron.

Bob is survived by Bernice, Thomas, Timothy (Elizabeth), and Cameron, as well as brothers, Kenyon (Minh) and Theodore (Lois).

A memorial service will be held at the Stadium Club in Bobcat Stadium at 4 p.m. Friday, June 21.
