Russ was born to Charley and Frances (Shelhamer) Robinson on Nov. 23, 1955, in Livingston, Montana. He spent all of his life at their ranch at Sedan, Montana. He attended Sedan Country school in his early years, going to Wilsall School as a 7th grader, and graduated from Wilsall High school in 1973. Russ attended Northern Montana College at Havre for one year where he played basketball.

On Sept. 28, 1974, he married Cheryl Lovely in Livingston, Montana. They resided and spent their married life on the ranch in Sedan, raising two wonderful children. Russ loved hunting and was fortunate enough to help his brother-in-law, Slim Keefer for a number of years. There, he made many, many lifelong friends. He also found a new love for pheasant hunting recently. He spent many days cooking barbeques with the "Butcher and the Russler". Russ loved watching a variety of sporting events and was always an avid community supporter. He never met a stranger. His true love was his ranch, and the ranch work. He devoted his life to it.
