Sadie Oostema, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, was ushered into the presence of her Lord and Savior on Nov. 6, 2014, at the age of 97.
The Guest Book is expired.
Sadie was the oldest of eleven children born to Lawrence and Cora Van Dyke on Nov. 11, 1916. Being the oldest meant she needed to be a helper for her mom, and in those days it was hard work to do with the lack of modern conveniences.
When she was 23 years old, she married Jacob (Jack) Oostema from Shepherd, Montana. Together they had six children and lived on various farms in the Amsterdam-Churchill area. They also had dairy cows.
Sadie provided for her family by planting a big garden and made wonderful meals. On a farm, that usually meant three big meals. She was a very good cook. Let's say, she liked food! She also made many sets of dish towels for her children and grandchildren.
Jack and Sadie wintered for many years in Arizona and then settled at Sky Valley Resort in Desert Hot Springs, California. Through this adventure, they gained new friends.
Sadie has some deep sorrow in her life, but also was blessed in so many ways. For the last 15 years or more, she had found new friends in the nursing homes. Sadie enjoyed most everything that they had to offer, especially the hymn songs, and she found contentment in her circumstances.
Sadie is survived by her sons, Bernard (Shelby) Oostema, Loren (Arlene) Oostema and Howard Oostema; daughter, Sylvia (Klaas) Tuininga; brothers, Clarence (Marian) Van Dyke, Bob Van Dyke, Willard (Sylvia) Van Dyke; brothers-in-law, Sid (Leona) Oostema and Al (Hen) Oostema; sister, Margaret Kamerman; sisters-in-law, Daweena Van Dyke, Ann Van Dyke, Betty Van Dyke, Joan Van Dyke; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Cora Van Dyke; John (Stena) Oostema; husband, Jack; and daughters, Carolyn Joyce and Karen Huiner; granddaughter, Laura Oostema; grandson, Del Wayne Huiner; great-grandson, Caleb Vinger; brothers, Louie, Neal, Arnold, Jim and Ray; brothers-in-laws, Bert Kamerman, George Veltkamp, Jake Brouwer, Garret Oppewal; sister, Bertina (Bernie) Veltkamp; sisters-in-law, Anna Oostema, Grace Brouwer, Jennie Oppewal, and Betty Terpstra.
