She was born on Nov. 17, 1945, in Staten Island, N.Y., to the late Ora McLean and his wife, Avis McLean. She was the first of three children and was followed by her sister, Shirley and her brother, Ron.
Sharon graduated from Campion Academy in Colorado and then attended classes at Union College in Nebraska, where she met her future husband, Larry R. Thayer. She then went on to earn a degree in social sciences from Loma Linda University in California.
On Aug. 27, 1967, she was married to Larry in Lincoln, Neb. After 38 years of marriage, they were divorced in 2005. Sharon has lived in Bozeman since 1982.
After her graduation in 1969, Sharon worked for the county hospital in Loma Linda, later becoming a full-time social worker for Loma Linda University Hospital while her husband attended medical school. She stopped working to become a full-time mother to her children, Shan (born in 1972) and Sonya (born in 1975).
Sharon was a long-standing member of the Bozeman Seventh-day Adventist church. She enjoyed playing music from an early age, often accompanying her father on his preaching circuit. She continued playing throughout her life and served as church organist and pianist in Bozeman for several years. Sharon also taught music and swimming and worked with youth groups regularly.
She is survived by her children, Shan Thayer and Sonya Thayer; mother, Avis; brother, Ron; and sister, Shirley; and former husband, Larry.
She was preceded in death by her father, Ora McLean in 2006.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 7, at the Bozeman Seventh-day Adventist Church, 24 N. 15th Ave. Pastor Jim Jenkins will conduct the service.
