Shirley Mae Hamp passed away Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, surrounded by her family.
The Guest Book is expired.
Shirley was born in Minneapolis on Nov. 18, 1932 to Cornelius and Emma Schneider, the youngest of four daughters. Shirley met Charlie while they were students at West High from which she graduated in 1950. They were married in January 1954 and spent the following two years in Ft. Smith, Ark., where Charlie was stationed in the Army.
They subsequently lived in Massapequa, Long Island, New York, Chicago, Minneapolis and Bozeman. They were blessed with three children, Terry (Richard Sill) of Duluth, Minn., Nancy (Rick Barber) of Bozeman, and Charlie III (Heidi Hamp) of Broomfield, Colo. The family expanded to include six grandchildren, Kali and Caleb Hamp-Sill, Annie and Jimmy Barber, Shannon and Henry Hamp. The success of their children and grandchildren speaks volumes about what an inspirational and committed person Shirley was.
Shirley delighted in an especially warm and meaningful relationship with her sister-in-law, Florence (Bob Dawson) of Chicago, Ill.
In Bozeman, they owned "Charlie's Restaurant" on Main Street, getting to know a broad cross-section of Bozeman's residents and visitors. Shirley enjoyed being involved in the community. She volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, most notably Women Build, and for many years assisted people at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital's Information Desk.
She loved Duplicate and Marathon bridge, gardening, golf, music (two long-time favorites, Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson), and newspaper puzzles. Her proudest achievement was her family. To say they will miss her is an understatement of enormous proportion.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9, at the Emerson Cultural Center Ballroom.
Memorials may be sent to Bozeman Public Library Foundation, P.O. Box 6242, Bozeman, MT 59771 or Bozeman Deaconess Foundation (with Hospice in the memo line), 931 Highland Blvd, Suite 3200, Bozeman, MT 59715.
Arrangements are in the care of Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service, www.dokkennelson.com.
