Loyal, kind, independent and totally unique, Sylvia McDaniel was greatly loved by family and friends.
Sylvia loved travel and meeting people. She loved woods and water and wild things. By the time she hit her teens, she had sailed widely in the Pacific Northwest and skied the Cascades and the Rockies. She also lived in Germany as an exchange student, and visited relatives in Britain.
Sylvia graduated from Juanita High School in Kirkland, Washington, in 1981. She gained the distinction of being awarded the National Merit Scholarship - honored for academic skills and achievement, extracurricular accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous university studies. Her time at Washington State University majoring in journalism was a mere sideline to her lifetime of writing moving and witty poetry.
She found great joy in making people happy. Sylvia was an inspired hostess who would invest hours creating a gourmet meal, to which her quirky and sublime cookbook collection stands testament. She engaged strangers in conversation and spread kindness like confetti wherever she went.
Sylvia found her natural habitat with her kindred spirit, Pat Hill, in the Gallatin Valley and surrounding mountains. She was respected in the local Bozeman music scene, whether sharing her vast knowledge of music during rap sessions with the best of its entertainers and aficionados, or gracing the stage with her lovely voice. The Montana outdoor festival season brought together her favorite ways to celebrate life: music, diverse gatherings of happy people, road tripping, hot springs, camping - all together under the big Montana sky.
Even when her body was failing she never passed up an opportunity to get out and go. Her last gypsy adventure took place mere weeks before she died, in their newly acquired RV, hitting up a favorite band in Montana's capital city. Her last conversation was of music and the coming summer's musical traveling feast.
Sylvia's passing leaves a silence we all hope to fill with cherished memories of her and celebration of her lively spirit. She is survived by her beloved Pat Hill; mother, Katherine White Poppe Constable; stepfather, Roger Constable; daughter, Brenna White Poppe; sisters, Cristina Poppe McGlynn and Elizabeth Poppe Steppe; aunts, Judith White Heath and Linda Davis Smith; nephew, Seamus McGlynn and nieces, Sarah McGlynn, Madeline Steppe and Gabrielle Steppe.
A celebration of Sylvia's life is planned in the Bridger Mountains over Sweet Pea weekend, the first weekend of August.
