On his never-ending quest for cold smoke powder, Tyler Browne Stetson, age 20, died Jan. 20, 2008, as a result of an avalanche while backcountry skiing in Beehive Basin near Big Sky.

Tyler was an avid and experienced outdoorsman who loved telemark and backcountry skiing, rock and ice climbing and mountaineering. He truly lived his dreams every day. His contagious smile, big heart and laughter brought happiness to all his friends and family. His boundless energy was legendary. His spirit will be long remembered.

Tyler was born May 13, 1987, in Burlington, Vt. He graduated from Champlain Valley Union High School in 2005. He was a junior at Montana State University.

He is the son of John and Gwen (Kugler) Stetson Jr. of Shelburne, Vt.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, George Kugler.

He is survived by his parents, John and Gwen Stetson Jr.; sister, Amy Stetson of Shelburne, Vt., and Bozeman; grandparents, Ann Kugler of Shelburne, Vt., and John and Margaret Stetson of Barneveld, N.Y.; Uncle Andrew (Sue) Stetson of Barneveld, N.Y.; Uncle Jim (Kathleen) Stetson of Hamden, Conn.; Aunt Martha (Stetson) Crossley of Barneveld, N.Y.; Uncle Rolf Kugler of Bellefonte, Pa.; Aunt Gretchen (Steve) Chenenko of Columbus, Ohio; cousins, Blake, Dan, Nate, Sarah, Carter, Vinna, and Elena. Tyler is also survived by a large community of very special friends and extended family.

As Tyler would have wanted, friends are welcome to join the family for a moment of remembrance at the top of the Bridger Lift on Wednesday, Jan. 23; please gather at 1 p.m. at the base of the Quad Lift (Powder Park) at Bridger Bowl.

There will also be a time of remembrance at 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, outside the Basebox Lodge at Mad River Glen. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at Shelburne United Methodist Church in Shelburne, Vt.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Mad River Glen Ski Area Single Chair Fund. Donations may be made in Tyler's name to the Stark Mountain Foundation Single Chair Campaign, P.O. Box 2124, Waitsfield, VT 05673; or online at www.starkmountain.org.
