Virgil "Sarge" Putman, 88, passed away Jan. 25, 2012 at his home in Bozeman. He was born Feb. 8, 1923 in Van Buren, Ark. to Kenneth and Elizabeth Putman.

Virgil married Alice Nunes on Aug. 6, 1951 in Yuma, Ariz. He served in the United States Navy for four years and then retired from the United States Army after serving more than 20 years. He then was a teacher for ROTC. He attained the status as a 32 degree Mason, which was a life-long passion.

After his retirement from the military, Virgil became a trucking legend when he started his own trucking business, V.K. Putman Trucking Co. He was very well-loved by his many friends and relatives and was successful in all his endeavors.

Virgil fancied himself as a gambler and was very proud to have a private table and a free room when he went to Las Vegas. He and his wife Alice very much enjoyed traveling the country in their RV. Places visited included Alaska, Arkansas and California.

Virgil was preceded in death by one sister and several brothers. He is survived by his wife, Alice; son, John and dog, Mischa.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Jan. 30, 2012 at Dahl Funeral Chapel.
