Wanda K. (Parent) Browne, 67, of Hillsboro, Ore., died of heart failure on Friday evening, July 3, 2009, at Tuality Community Hospital.

A memorial gathering will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 17, at the Walters Cultural Arts Center, 527 E. Main St., Hillsboro, Ore.

The daughter of Gordon and Emma Parent, Wanda was born on April 23, 1942, in Bozeman. She grew up enjoying spending time with her family including a brother and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Wanda graduated from Bozeman High School in 1960.

Wanda attended Montana State University where she was a member of the Sigma Beta Chapter of Chi Omega Women's Fraternity. After earning her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education in 1964, she was recruited to teach in the Pacific Northwest and moved to Portland, Ore. She taught at Kenton Elementary School in Portland for seven years.

In early 1966, Wanda met Kingston Browne on a blind date. The two were married eight months later on Aug. 6, 1966, and celebrated over 43 years together. With the birth of their son, Darren, Wanda retired from teaching in 1970. Three and a half years later, Wanda and Kingston would have a daughter, Julie, in 1973. Wanda spent time volunteering at her children's schools as a room mother, on the PTA and on multiple committees at Eastwood Elementary School, Poynter Junior High School and Glencoe High School. She also volunteered her time with her son's Cub Scout program.

While both children attended school full time, Wanda went to work for a children's bookstore which allowed her to explore and share her love for books. With a past in education, she especially enjoyed working with school teachers and librarians.

Some of Wanda's happiest times were of spending time with her family and friends. She always enjoyed trips with Kingston to the Oregon Coast, and for the last two years delighted in taking care of her granddaughter twice a week. She was also an avid gardener and particularly enjoyed tending to her roses.

Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, Gordon and Emma Parent.

She is survived by her husband, Kingston Browne of Hillsboro, Ore.; a brother, Ron Parent of Las Vegas, Nev.; son, Darren Browne of Beaverton, Ore.; daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Tim Kasper of Hillsboro, Ore.; and a granddaughter, Payton Kasper of Hillsboro. Wanda was anxiously awaiting the birth of her second granddaughter in August.

Remembrances may be sent to the Hillsboro Schools Foundation, 5193 N.E. Elam Young Parkway, Suite A, Hillsboro, OR 97124.

Tualatin Valley Funeral Alternatives in Hillsboro is in charge of the arrangements; (503) 693-7965.
