Mabel Olene Haynes, 95, who compiled an extensive history of Judith Gap and the surrounding area, passed away at Wheatland Memorial Healthcare in Harlowton, Mont. on April 26, 2012. Mabel was born Aug. 24, 1916, in Judith Gap, the daughter of George S. and Nettie (Stone) Haynes.

Mabel attended elementary and high school in Judith Gap. She attended Principia College, Eastern Montana College, and the University of Montana, where she received a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in counseling. She taught for eight years in Montana – two years in Sweet Grass County, three years in Ennis and three years in Laurel.

Mabel enlisted in the Marine Corps after Pearl Harbor in July 1943. She was a control tower operator at the Marine Air Station in El Centro, Calif. for one year. After attending Officer Candidate School she was the Plans and Training Officer for Women Recruits at Camp Lejeune, N.C. In May 1946 she went on inactive duty as a Second Lieutenant, and she retired from the Marine Reserves in December 1957 as a First Lieutenant.

Mabel joined the Principia College staff in Elsah, Ill. as a housemother in 1950. In 1956 she accepted the position of administrative associate to the dean and associate dean of Women of the College where she remained until 1971. During this time she traveled extensively to Japan, Kenya and South Africa.

She moved back to Montana in 1972 and was in business with her brother, Mark Haynes, at Haynes Store, Inc., in Judith Gap. In addition to her duties at the store, she became known as the official (or unofficial) historian and weather reporter. In the early 1980s she embarked on writing histories of the Judith Gap area as well as histories of the Haynes and Stone families. She was the official weather reporter for the National Weather Service for more than 30 years recording the daily temperature and, most importantly, wind velocity.

Mabel was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Mary Stranahan Chapter; The First Church of Christ, Scientist; and the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Mabel is survived by her nephew, George Haynes and his wife Deborah, grandnieces, Maren and Aigerim and grandnephew, Aidar; and her niece, Lorraine Peterson and husband, Jim, grandnephew, Robert, grandniece, Jennifer and husband, Darryl, and great-grandniece, Vivian and great-grandnephew, Stone.
