He was born July 9, 1937 to Bennie and Mildred Hanson and was raised on the family farm in Minnewaukan, N.D. Moving to Bozeman, he graduated from high school and enlisted in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Special awards were given for pulling two kids out of a fire and rescuing a sailor from drowning. He was honorably discharged and recommended for re-enlistment.

He joined the Bozeman Police Department and served for the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office and the Highway Patrol until retiring in 1977.

Dar and family enjoyed many camping adventures and fondest memories took place in the Shields Valley, where Carlene grew up. After losing his wife in 1999, Dar remained in the Bozeman and Belgrade area. He enjoyed watching birds, building bird houses, campfires, watching his dogs play, and watching the airplanes fly in and out.
