Darvin Benny Hanson passed away in the George E. Wahlen VA Hospital on Monday, Feb. 11, 2013.

He was born July 9, 1937 to Bennie and Mildred Hanson and was raised on the family farm in Minnewaukan, N.D. Moving to Bozeman, he graduated from high school and enlisted in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Special awards were given for pulling two kids out of a fire and rescuing a sailor from drowning. He was honorably discharged and recommended for re-enlistment.
Dar met the love of his life, Carlene Hamilton Hanson, and they were married in 1960 in Las Vegas, Nev. Remaining in Bozeman, Dar and Carlene raised two children, John and Mandy.
He joined the Bozeman Police Department and served for the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office and the Highway Patrol until retiring in 1977.
Dar and family enjoyed many camping adventures and fondest memories took place in the Shields Valley, where Carlene grew up. After losing his wife in 1999, Dar remained in the Bozeman and Belgrade area. He enjoyed watching birds, building bird houses, campfires, watching his dogs play, and watching the airplanes fly in and out. His grandson, Jeremiah, built a horseshoe pit for him, and he loved putting model airplanes together.
He is survived by children, John (Codie); daughter, Mandy; grandsons, Colter and Cody Hanson and Jeremiah Johnson; sister, Linda (Ronie) Shumway; brother, Ron Hanson; niece, Gayle Lynn Hanson; sister-in-law, Betty Voth; and brothers-in-law, Bill Voth and Dave Nelson.
Visitation will be held Friday, Feb. 22, 2013 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Dokken-Nelson Sunset Chapel. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 23 at 10 a.m. at Dokken-Nelson Sunset Chapel with interment to follow in Sunset Hills Cemetery.
