Larry Kain passed away peacefully in his home in Billings on Monday, Aug. 11. Born on St. Patrick's Day of 1929 to Charles and Bernice Kain, Larry graduated from Helena High School and Stanford University. He was an active musician who loved playing drums in marching bands in school and the Elks Drum and Bugle Corps. He also loved dancing and playing cards. He was a master storyteller, and he loved a good joke.
The Guest Book is expired.
Larry met Sue Peterson when they were both working at Yellowstone Park in 1950, and they married later that year. He then served in the army (Germany) from 1951 to 1953. After his service, he lived in Helena until 1966, when the family moved to Bozeman, where Larry worked as assistant to the vice president for research at Montana State University. Larry was instrumental in building a computer system to manage grants and contracts, as well as serving the MSU Foundation. He retired in 1986.
Sue passed away in 1979, and Larry married Joan DeWolf Hedge in 1982. They merged two families of grown children, and alternated their time between Bozeman, a cabin in the Swan Valley, and Las Vegas until 2007, when they relocated permanently to Billings. Larry is survived by his loving wife, Joan; children, Kris Kain from North Bend, Ore., Daniel Kain (Kerry) from Flagstaff, Ariz., Shirlee Steiner (Stuart) from Spokane, Wash., and Connie Clark (Cliff) from Billings; step-children, Bill Hedge (Gretchen) from Helena, Bruce Hedge (Jan) from Boise, Idaho, and John Hedge (Pete) from Billings; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, 2014 at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, a memorial can be made to the Kain Family Memorial Scholarship Fund, Montana State University Foundation, P.O. Box 172750, Bozeman, MT 59717-2750.
