92, Bradenton, died March 19, 2016. Born in Polk, OH Betty moved to Bradenton in 1962 from Akron, OH and was a member of Westside Christian Church. Betty Jane & Robert Lee were Married at First Christian Church in Ashland, KY on May 29, 1942. She received her Bachelor of Arts and was in the First Graduating Class of the University of West Florida in Pensacola in June of 1969 and was a Second Grade School Teacher at Orange Ridge Elementary School of Bradenton for 20 years. She was a member of the Manatee Retired Educators Association. Betty played the Marimba until recently which was a gift from her parents for her 13th Birthday. She loved to travel both driving and cruising, loved listening and singing to music, watching sports, engaging with her grandchildren and soon to be 19th grandchild through facetime, although she said prayer was the world's greatest wireless connection. She enjoyed card games like Skip Bo and watching sports and she had a love for education. You always found her smiling or chuckling. Predeceased by parents, Henry Isaiah and Rebecca Jane (Fosnight) Williams; husband, Robert Lee Edwards; son, Lee Robert Edwards; sisters, Dorothy Depew and Margaret Bly; survived by son, William H. (Angela) Edwards of Bradenton, FL; daughters, Betty Joyce (Dr. Stanley) Thompson of San Antonio, TX and Rebecca Sue (Timothy) Surgenor; daughter-in-law, Carla L. Edwards of Bradenton, FL; grandchildren, Deborah (Dr. Russell) Coates, Robert (Christine) Caraway, Kenneth (Clarissa) Thompson, Kathy (Andrew - Air Force) Thompson-Workman, Christopher (Kelli) Thompson - Navy, Troy (Angie) Edwards, Kim Edwards, Ann Nicole Edwards, Nikki Amanda Gordon - Retired Navy, Mark Anthony Victor (Amy - Air Force) Goslin - Air Force, Krista Elaine Edwards, Tiffany (Ben) Greer and Jason (Meghan) Surgenor; great-grandchildren, Isabella Coates, Maggi, Ben and Sam Carraway, Kaiden, Levi and Kari Thompson, Natasha and Ayla Workman, Elijah Thompson, Bailey, Ariel and Adrienne Edwards, Ashlie, Zachary John and Bethany Ann Odom, T.J. Greer and Drew and Piper Surgenor. She is also survived by her travel companion, best friend and co-worker Joan Begthal who will miss her greatly. Services will be 3PM Thursday March 24, 2016 at Westside Christian Church, 3604 15th Avenue West, Bradenton, FL 34205. Burial will be private for the family.
