Our beloved mother, Marie A. Lehrer, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2016. She is survived by two sons, a daughter, and four grandchildren, all of whom were beneficiaries of her clear thinking and compassionate nature. She was born Marie Antoinette Giunta in Queens, New York, finished high school, and married Richard Lehrer at age 18. They lived happily together for many years in North Bellmore, where her children finished high school and then left for college. Our mother worked briefly as a bookkeeper and then as an office manager, at a time when it was unusual for a woman to work while still raising children. She even took on a position that required a nearly 2 hour car commute! Our parents enjoyed living in an idyllic setting in the mountains of N.Y. during their mid-life years. Finally, they moved to Bradenton, enjoying the beaches and Dad's cousin who lived here, although both Cousin and Dad had passed away some eighteen years ago. Marie loved nature and wildlife. She enjoyed international travel recently, including a trip to Costa Rica which included her hiking up a mountain and zip-lining through the forest canopy in 2014. It may have been the fall 2015 trip to the Alps that did her in, as she struggled to regain her health thereafter. If so, we don't believe she had any regrets, though she would have thoroughly enjoyed living to see a woman elected as President of the U.S. at last. This, too, she was passionate about. Way to go, Mom. Should you wish to make a donation to honor Marie's memory, please consider directing it to Mote Marine Lab of Sarasota or Tidewell Hospice of Bradenton.
