MANATEE - Marjorie G. Kinnan has died.

Kinnan was a longtime educator and school board member honored with a school in her name - Marjorie G. Kinnan Elementary School.

Kinnan was honored on her last birthday by the students and faculty at the school. In a video, titled "The ABCs of Mrs. Kinnan," students and their teachers sang various renditions of the traditional birthday song. Some included a "cha-cha-cha" and wiggle dance between verses, while others ended the tune with a low "aaaand many morrrre."

Faculty, students, friends and family at the party sat around brightly decorated tables, placemats decorated by students and floral centerpieces.

Kinnan was named Manatee County Citizen of the Year in 1999. She served on the Manatee County School Board for 16 years, including three years as chairwoman. A former math teacher and guidance counselor, Kinnan and her family have lived in Manatee County since 1951, she said.

In 1998, members of the school board voted to name a new school after her. About two years later, the school at 3415 Tallevast Road was dedicated in her name.
