87, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2013 at Tidewell Hospice in Bradenton, FL following a brief illness with cancer. Mr. Elkins was born August 1st, 1925 in Valier, Illinois to the late Earnest K. and Luna Elkins. He was preceded in death by his lifelong soul mate and wife of 57 years, LaVerne L. Elkins. Mr. Elkins is survived by three loving children, daughter Cynthia Brown of Elgin, SC; sons, David J. Elkins (Shirley) of St. Petersburg, FL, and Jeffrey P. Elkins (Sandy) of Easley, SC. Also included are several nephews and nieces. He was an Army Veteran of WWII in both European and Pacific Theatres. He re-enlisted during the Korean Conflict and was a Reserved Commissioned Officer until 1961. He attended the University of Florida under the GI Bill and graduated in 1950. His grandfather fought for the Confederacy. He retired to Bradenton, FL in 1984 after serving 30 years with the Veterans Administration as a VA Loan Guarantee Officer. He was a passionate member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He volunteered for a variety of causes including Shepard's Watch and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church 9:30 A.M. Monday March 25, 2013. Brown & Sons Funeral Homes 43rd Street Chapel in charge.
