Dorothy Shields Obituary

UTICA, N.Y. - Dorothy Victoria Holub Shields, 85, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday (March 27, 2013) as she passed away in the comfort of her son's home with the devotion and support of those who loved her.
Born in Chicago, Ill., on July 29, 1927, Dorothy was the daughter of Henry and Celia Bachleitner Holub. Raised in her native city, she was a 1946 graduate of Harrison High School. Dorothy's first job was at Walgreen's Drugstore in Chicago. She subsequently worked as a hostess with the USO. It was during her work there that she met her future husband and they began their courtship. On Feb. 26, 1947, she married C. Lawrence Shields Jr., with whom she shared 60 years prior to his passing on Aug. 14, 2007; theirs was a marriage of their era. It was one of loyalty, hard work and the ability to mesh as a team. They guided their children and raised them with love and family values.
Dorothy was an independent soul who was blessed with a generous spirit. Dorothy would have felt that her greatest achievement was the proud feeling she held in her heart for each of her children. In her earlier years, Dorothy was giving of her time and talents to many organizations and service clubs. She was a former Cub Scout Mother, a volunteer at the Red Feather, Alma Community Center, and Bradford (Pa.) Hospital Snack Bar, a member of the Bradford Landmark Society where she held an office, sponsor of the first Crook Farm Country Fair, and founder and past member of the Bradford Garden Club. She was a bright bridge player who, along with her husband, participated in many memorable games, and also partook in the sport of bowling. Dorothy loved gardening, hand-picking the loveliest seasonal and perennial blooms and nurturing them with care. After the passing of her husband, Dorothy's children opened their homes for seasonal visits until her ill health prevented those travels and she remained in the care of her son, Pat and his partner Tom, who cared for her in a style fitting her wishes.
She enjoyed the love and affection of her canine companion "Suze."
Dorothy is survived by her children and their families, Patrick (Thomas Mazza) Shields of Leonardsville, Janine (Douglas) Bell of McKinney, Texas, and Daniel (Diane) Shields of Fountain Inn, S.C.; her grandchildren, Chad and Sheila Shields; Christopher and Gabriella Bell, Matthew and Alysia Bell, Mark and Misty Bell; Dane Shields, Haley Shields, and Celia Shields; and her great-grandchildren, Colin Shields, Makenzie Shields, Laura Stephens and Jessica Stephens. She also leaves a multitude of nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins, and in-laws Francis "Baine" Shields, Richard and Joyce Shields, James and Roberta Shields, and Robert and Nellie Shields.
She was preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Roger Cloud; and her in-laws Phyllis and Orville Dickerson, and Marge Shields.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from noon to 2 p.m. at the Mascho Funeral Home Inc., 75 Kennedy St., in Bradford, with funeral services at the conclusion of visitation at the funeral home officiated by the Rev. Patrick Cox.
Expressions of sympathy in the form of donations may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. or the Leonardsville United Methodist Church in lieu of flowers; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Dorothy's family and friends will also receive visitors from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc. 932 South St., Utica NY 13501.
She will be entombed next to her husband in St. Bernard's Cemetery Mausoleum.
