Alfred Smith

Alfred E. "Ed" Smith, 80, of 443 Bolivar Drive, passed away Sunday (Feb. 2, 2014) at Bradford Regional Medical Center.
Born April 10, 1933, in Cresson, he was the son of the late Francis T. and Margaret Ivory Smith. On July 22, 1961, in Revloc, he married Patricia Bednar Smith, who survives.
Mr. Smith was a 1951 graduate of Cresson High School. On April 9, 1953, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on March 15, 1955.
He had worked at Ford Motor Co. in Cleveland, Ohio, then attended Williamsport Technical School. In 1957, he worked at the Architectural Firm of Abbey, Hemmingway and Coatsworth. While working at the firm, he received his architectural registration in 1968, and in 1989 he became co-owner and president of Preston R. Abbey Inc. until his retirement in 1998. He was a registered architect in Pennsylvania, New York state and Ohio. He was the architect in designing and especially proud of the Zippo/Case Museum.
He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church and American Legion Post #108.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of 52 years, is a daughter, Paula M. Smith; three sons, Ronald F. Smith, Donald J. (Cindy) Smith and Keith E. Smith, all of Bradford; five grandchildren, Robert, Brian, Danny, Anthony and Tyler Smith; two sisters, Janet Rice of Hollidaysburg and Elizabeth A. Hoover of Vero Beach, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Helen M. Vogel.
Family will be receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes Inc., 372 East Main St., where a Rosary service will be held at 8 p.m. Friends are also invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. Stephen Collins, pastor, as celebrant. Military honors and committal services will be held in St. Bernard Cemetery.
