JOHNSONBURG - Eugene A. "Oscar" Kriegel, 88, of 10 Samsel Ave., Johnsonburg, died Tuesday afternoon (April 1, 2014) at Penn Highlands Elk in St. Marys following a brief illness.
On Dec. 17, 1945, he married Virginia M. "Chook" Williams. She died Oct. 23, 1994.
He was a World War II
Navy vet, serving at sea as a Fire Controlman Third Class aboard the USS Quincy, where he earned the Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal with 2 stars and the European-African-Middle Eastern Medal with 2 stars. He was a Korean War
Navy vet, serving at sea as a Fire Controlman Third Class aboard the USS Strong. He also served in the Naval Reserve before being discharged on Oct. 15, 1968.
Surviving are two brothers, Robert B. Kriegel of Whitehouse Point, Fla., and L. David (Rose) Kriegel of Johnsonburg; three sisters, Catherine L. "Kay" Brown of Erie, Sarah Neilson of Johnsonburg and Nancy C. (Gerald) Chiesa of Johnsonburg; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; wife; son, William Dean "Billy" Kriegel in 1973; brother, Richard "Dick" Kriegel; and sisters Agnes "Ag" Mehalko and Frances G. Jackson.
Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Anthony F. Ferragine Funeral Home, 401 Chestnut St., Johnsonburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg, with the Rev. David J. Wilson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Johnsonburg. Military honors will be accorded by the Johnsonburg-Wilcox Servicemen's Detail. Detail members are asked to assemble at the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. Friday.
