Helen L. Shuman, 93, of 31 School St., Rixford, passed away Friday (Oct. 5, 2012) at Bradford Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 28, 1919, in Smethport, she was a daughter of the late John T. and Mary Alice Gorman Cunningham. On Sept. 21, 1947, in St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Baltimore, Md., she married William F. "Bill" Shuman Jr., who passed away April 27, 2000.
A 1938 graduate of Otto High School, she attended Beaver College for Women in Jenkintown, and later Strayer College in Washington, D.C., studying business.
She worked in Washington, D.C. as a congressional aide for many years, and later at Chrysler Corp. in Indianapolis, Ind. She returned to Rixford and held the position of secretary and treasurer of the Cunningham Natural Gas Co.
She was an avid NFL fan, an American history buff and enjoyed playing cards. She loved her family and friends, as well as vacationing in Maryland, Virginia, Canada and Cuba Lake, N.Y.
Her family is blessed to have had her wisdom, strength, faith and love throughout their lives.
She is survived by two daughters, Marcia Shuman of Rixford, and Kay (Scott) Baker of Emporium; one son, Craig W. Shuman of Rixford; three grandchildren, Kara (PJ Ryan) Riggs of Buffalo, N.Y., and Paul and Michael Baker, both of Emporium; one precious great-granddaughter, Abigail Riggs; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one brother; and four sisters.
At the request of the family, there will be no public visitation. Funeral services will be private with the Rev. Max Simms, pastor of the Hilltop Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery in Smethport.
