James A. Gates Sr., 87, of 486 Lambert Drive, Bradford, passed away Tuesday (Nov. 5, 2013) at the Bradford Manor.
Born on Oct. 15, 1926, in Bradford, he was a son of the late Clinton E. and Josephine R. Burdick Gates Sr. On July 16, 1949, in Bradford, he married Colleen F. Birmingham Gates, who died May 27, 2007.
Mr. Gates was a 1948 graduate of Curwensville High School. He served in the U.S. Navy
during World War II
, in the Atlantic and Pacific Theater. He is a World War II Memorial Charter Member and a member of Sampson WWII Navy Veteran Inc.
He worked as a laborer at Witco Kendall/Packaging Plant for 43 years and was a member of the Quarter Century Club.
His passions were scouting, hiking, Penn State and Buffalo Bills football. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America for 50+ years, serving as a Scoutmaster for Troop #499 and received the Silver Beaver Award. He saw his four sons and grandson become Eagle Scouts. He was a member of the American Legion.
Surviving are five children, James A. (Kathy) Gates Jr. of Mechanicsburg, Robin B. Gates of Erie, Thomas E. Gates of Oil City, Michael F. Gates of Enola and Kathleen F. Gates of Marietta; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and one sister, Barbara Steffenson in Oregon.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Clayton, Clinton, David and Howard Gates; and two sisters, Dorothy Pollock and Sylvia Cormack.
Family will be receiving friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes Inc., 33 South Ave., where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Raymond Gramata, pastor of St. Bernard Church, officiating. Military honors and committal services will follow in St. Bernard Cemetery.
