BROCKWAY - Merle E. Keister of Brockway passed away on Monday (March 10, 2014) at the age of 88 from natural causes.
Mr. Keister is survived by his wife, Elva; and four children, Tim Keister, Mark Keister, Linda Devlin and Perry Keister. He also leaves behind 12 grandchildren, Patrick Frano, Ashley Allen, Jessica Keister, Laura Frano, Chynea Keister, Travis Keister, Joseph Keister, Elizabeth Simmons, Sarah Keister, Merinda Rich, Laurel Beth Crisp and Brenna Raye Keister as well as six great-grandchildren, Ashton, Adam, Peyton, Kaitlyn, Kennedy and William.
Merle was a veteran
of World War II, where he proudly served with the 8th Army Air Force Squadron. He was born to Margaret and Newton Keister on Feb. 12, 1926. He had two brothers, George and Ira Keister (now deceased). Upon returning from the war, he married Elva Jones on Aug. 16, 1948, and started a long career with Brockway Glass Co. Inc., where he retired after 40 years.
A gregarious member of the community, he served as commander to the Brockway VFW
Club and Post 95 of the Brockway American Legion. Merle was the proud Scoutmaster of Boy Scouts of America Troop 40. He was also a long-time member and usher of the Moorehead Methodist Church.
He is remembered by his family as a good man with simple needs - riding his blue tractor, working his beloved farm.
A visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Carlson-Shugarts Funeral Home, Brockway. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Friday at the Moorhead United Methodist Church in Brockway with the Rev. Robert Trask officiating. Burial will follow in Wildwood Cemetery. Full military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post #95 Friday morning at the church.
Merle requested donations be made to Moorehead Methodist Church of Brockway; Brockway Historical Society Museum; or Boy Scout Troop 40.
