George A. Carlough Jr., a loving husband, father and grandfather, 70, of 13 Mill St., Bradford, passed away Friday (Feb. 7, 2014) surrounded by his family at his residence.
Born Oct. 6, 1943, in Bradford, he was a son of the late Helen Johnson Carlough-Thompson and George A. Carlough Sr. On July 4, 1964, in Kerrville, Texas, he married Judith A. Smith Carlough, who survives.
Mr. Carlough was a 1961 graduate of Bradford High School and later attended Lindsey Wilson College and Penn State University. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on Jan. 8, 1964, and was honorably discharged on Jan. 5, 1968. He remained on reserve duty until Jan. 7, 1970.
He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church and was a former member of the First Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon and Elder. He was a former member of the DeMolay, was very active in the Boy Scouts of America and was presented the God & Country Award and the Order of Arrow Award. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf.
He formerly worked at Owens-Illinois for many years, and retired from Graham Packaging.
Surviving, in addition to his wife Judy of 49 years, are two daughters, Susan (Heath) Sadler of Dothan, Ala., and Cynthia (Bryan) Beatty of Moon Township; one son, George (Heidi) Carlough of Houston, Pa.; one sister, Patricia (Dale) Wellington of Springhill, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Laura (Gerardo) Sosa, Shannon Carlough, Bryce Sadler, Mason Sadler, Abigail Beatty, Angelina Beatty and Amelia Beatty; and two great-grandchildren, Leonidas and Gabriel Sosa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and stepfather, Brookey E. Thompson.
Family will be receiving friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes Inc., 372 East Main St., where funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Matt Blake, pastor of the Bradford Area Parish, officiating. After the service, members of the U.S. Air Force will present military honors in the funeral home. Burial will be in McKean Memorial Park, Lafayette.
