SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Robert William "Bob" Jones Sr., 94, of Marcola, died Thursday (June 20, 2013) at Riverbend Hospital in Springfield of age-related causes.
Robert was born in Rew, Pa., on Dec. 13, 1918, to John H. and Margaret Bergman Jones, the oldest of four children. He was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Jones Clark, and by his brother, John Jones. He is survived by his sister, Carolyn Jones Smead of Smethport, Pa.
Robert married Charlotte (Bette) Runyan on April 5, 1940, at the St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Smethport. They shared 56 years of marriage until her passing on Oct. 22, 1996. He was also preceded in death by his son, Thomas R. Jones on May 29, 2006. Robert is survived by his son, Robert "Bill" W. (Janice) Jones Jr. of Marcola; his daughter, Barbara (Stan) Jones Putnam of Dexter; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Robert served in World War II in the Pacific Campaign, Battle of Luzon, with the 46th Engineer Construction Battalion. He was awarded medals for the Asiatic Pacific Campaign, Good Conduct, Philippines Liberation Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal and Rifle M1 Expert Medals.
He was employed with Kendall Refining Co. in Bradford, Pa., for 26 years, then moved to Marcola and became owner/operator of the Marcola Arco Gas Station. Robert was an avid fisherman, hunter, life time member of the NRA, VFW of Marcola and member of the Republican National Party. He was proud, dedicated and a man of many strengths that was revealed through his love of country and of his family. He will be greatly missed.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Major Family Funeral Home with Pastor Wayne Rowe officiating. There was a visitation at the funeral home from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday. He was laid to rest at Springfield Memorial Cemetery.
