PENFIELD - Alfred Johnson, 81, died peacefully at home on Monday (Oct. 17, 2016) from a recent battle with cancer.
He was born March 4, 1935, in Caledonia, a son of Alfred Leroy and Veronica Margaret Fox Johnson. On Sept. 8, 1962, in Frewsburg, N.Y., by a Methodist minister, he married Elaine G. Beck, who survives at home.
Mr. Johnson served for four years in the U.S. Navy as a radioman on an admiral's staff. He worked as a machinist in the carbon industry, retiring from SGL. He lived in the Weedville area most of his life. Mr. Johnson briefly left the Weedville area to serve in the Navy, returned to Weedville, married, and raised a family. Later in life, he accompanied his wife to Phoenix before returning to the Weedville area, where he enjoyed the remainder of his life.
He was an active member of the Weedville Wesleyan Church, involved in the Boy Scouts, MLFCU and participated in several mission trips. Mr. Johnson also enjoyed reading, board games, camping, family gatherings, traveling with family and computer activities.
He was good at constructing, fixing and organizing home improvements.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his children, Francis P Johnson of Weedville, Nancy (Scott) O'Donnell of St Marys, Randy L Johnson of Nevada and Barbara (AJ) Markarevitz of Bath, Pa.; a sister, Shirley Challingsworth of Hollywood, Pa.; a brother, William Johnson of Rhode Island; grandchildren, Nikki (Daniel) Carlson of St Marys, Brandon Boroi of St Marys, Amber Melendez of Bath, Andrea Markarevitz of Bath, and Kyran Haupt of Stoystown; a great-grandchild, Jaxen Carlson of St Marys; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. Nov. 26, 2016 at the Weedville Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Bryon Kleppinger officiating. The family will be receiving friends from 2 p.m. until service time at the church.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Ralph M. Geer Funeral Home, Penfield.
