KANE - Barbara J. "Barbie" Mertz, 76, of 28 Spring St., passed away Thursday (April 16, 2015) at Kane Community Hospital.
Born May 6, 1938, in Kane, she was a daughter of the late Steve and Ruth Hannold Novosel. On Sept. 1, 1956, in Kane, she married John Mertz, who survives.
Barbie, a homemaker, had previously served as bookkeeper for Steve Novosel Logging. She was a member of the Class of 1956 - the last class to graduate from Wilcox High School and was a Master Gardener and an excellent cook and baker. 
She was a member of St. Callistus Catholic Church where she formerly served as a religious education teacher and belonged to the Altar Rosary Society.
The family has lost a beautiful soul.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a daughter Lori (Rob) Braun of Erie; four grandchildren, Sarah Gibson, Allison Braun, Justin Feikls and John Feikls; a great-granddaughter, Sofia Zazado; a sister, Patty (Mike) Gamble of Kane; a brother, Charles R. Novosel of Kane; a son-in-law, Joseph (Josie) Feikls of Kane; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; and her loving caregiver, Emily Ferranto.
She was preceded in death, besides her parents, by a son, Steven Mertz in 1988 and a daughter, Julie Feikls in 2004.
The family will be receiving friends from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, in the gathering space at St. Callistus Catholic Church. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Philip Pinczewski, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Callistus Cemetery.
