SARASOTA, Fla. - Bill Jones, 85, passed away Sunday (Feb. 1, 2015) after a brief illness in Sarasota.
Bill was born July 2, 1929, and raised in Uniontown, Pa., graduated from Uniontown High School, then attended Lock Haven State College and the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. He married Catherine Russo on May 30, 1957. They relocated to Corry, Pa., where Bill was the art director of Corry Jamestown.
In 1972, he moved his family to Bradford, Pa., and Bill spent 23 years at Zippo Manufacturing, most recently as vice president and advertising manager. During his time in Bradford, he was active in the community as a past president of Rotary, a member of the Bradford Club and also as a Pennhills Club member. He was an avid golfer and sports enthusiast. Bill loved following his children in their youth, high school and college sports careers.
Upon retirement, Bill and Cathy moved to Sarasota in 1995 and spent 15 happy and healthy years there, where they enjoyed playing golf and bridge and socializing with their friends in the Meadows community together until Cathy's death in 2010. Bill also became a basketball referee at the age of 72 and was an active board member of the Gulf Coast Basketball Officials Association until hanging up the whistle at the age of 82.
Bill is predeceased by his father, Joseph, mother, Regina and beloved wife Catherine. He is survived by his children, Bill (Becky), Patrick, Jim and Kellie (Mark) Miller; grandchildren, Ian, Hillary, Aaron, Alex, Morgan, Gunnar and Katie; brothers Robert and Richard; several nieces and nephews, and his dear companion Jeanne Johnson.
A family service is planned in Farmington, Pa., on Saturday, April 18, at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. Donations in Bill's name can be made to The Tidewell Hospice House at 5759 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL. 34238.
