Donald M. Smith, 97, formerly of 100 Bates Road and Gilbert Lane, passed away Saturday (July 23, 2016) at the Bradford Manor.
Born Jan. 7, 1919, in Falls Creek, he was a son of the late William E. and Jennie Starr Smith. On Aug. 17, 1940, in Limestone, N.Y., he married Betty J. Wolcott Smith, who died on Sept. 27, 1993.
He attended Horton Township schools. Don enlisted in the U.S. Army on Sept. 2, 1943. He served in the European, African, Rhineland Theatre, where he drove Half/Track. He was awarded the American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars. Don was honorably discharged a Tech-5 on Jan. 9, 1946.
He was member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a former member of the Bradford Moose Lodge, Eagles Club, American Legion Post 108 of Bradford and VFW Post 2497 of Limestone, and he was a past commander of Limestone Legion Post 1560.
Mr. Smith worked as a tank truck gauger at National Transit Co. for more than 30 years, retiring in 1973.
Surviving is one daughter, Beverly (Bill) Newton of Trinity, Ala.; three sons, Richard (Cathy) Smith of Erie, Larry (Vera) Smith of Smethport and William (Diane) Smith of Derrick City; one daughter-in-law, Barbara Smith of Derrick City; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; one son, Dale Smith; one great-granddaughter, Autumn Rose Smith; four sisters; and four brothers.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes Inc., 372 East Main St., where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Seth McClymonds Jr., pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Military honors and committal services will follow in McKean Memorial Park, Lafayette.
