MOUNT JEWETT - Edgar C. "Ed" Sluga, 86, of Mount Jewett, passed away peacefully at his home with his family by his side, on Wednesday (Nov. 28, 2012).
Born Feb. 6, 1926, in Mount Jewett, he was a son of the late Frank and Mary Sluga. He was married to Lois E. Paulson Sluga, his partner of 66 years, who preceded him in death.
Ed was an extremely hard-working man who could fix, engineer and build just about anything, a true "jack-of-all trades" and master of all.
Prior to the plant closing in July of 1994, Ed worked for 50 years in the maintenance department of Howe's Leather Co., where he ultimately became maintenance foreman. Through the years, he worked many other "side" jobs, including running his farm, doing electrical work, some building, and spending many, many hours on his beloved Allis-Chalmers Tractors. This was all done to help provide for and raise his family
Ed was a proud, honorably discharged, Army veteran of World War II, who served his country in Germany where he was teamed up with his older brother, Charlie. He never spoke much about the war - only saying that it was the right thing to do and he was proud to have served.
He was a proud member of both the V.F.W. and American Legion in Mount Jewett. He also was a contributing member of the Mount Jewett Sportsmen's Club and belonged to St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
Surviving are his devoted daughter, Dolores Sluga in North Carolina; three sons, Craig (Anna) Sluga of North East, Jim (Lynn) Sluga and Kevin Sluga of Mount Jewett; 14 special grandchildren, Lowell, Kim, Adam, Jason, Michelle, Felicity, Rachel, Emily, Justin, Holly, Katy, Isaac, Matt and Tiffany; 22 great grandchildren; two brothers, Howard (Nellie) Sluga and Bill (Dorothy) Sluga; and three sisters, Helen Romaine, Daisy Korbar and Norma Batista; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death, in addition to his wife and parents, by a daughter, Diane Sluga; two sisters, Mary and Julia Sluga; and three brothers, Frank, Jim and Charlie Sluga.
Friends will be received from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Cummings Funeral Home Inc. in Mount Jewett, where a prayer service will be held at 8:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Bridgeview Cemetery.
