Eleanor M. Songer, 96, a 10-year resident of the Bradford Ecumenical Home, passed away Sunday (Dec. 30, 2012).
Born April 8, 1916, in Emporium, she was the daughter of Francis and Alice Shoup Brissee Sr. In February 1932, she married Walter E. Songer, who preceded her in death on Dec. 11, 1983.
Mrs. Songer attended St. Mary of the Angels Parochial School and was a graduate of Olean (N.Y.) High School. She resided in Bradford for most of her married life, and had been employed by the Ray and Derick Drug store for 10 years. She and her husband moved to Limestone, N.Y., in 1971.
She attended St. Francis Church in Bradford, and later attended St. Patrick's Church in Limestone. She enjoyed being a homemaker, spending time with her family and baking for her grandchildren.
Surviving are one daughter, Karen (Ron) Bergman of Chandler, Ariz.; four sons, William (Carol) Songer of Limestone, Joseph Songer of Pismo Beach, Calif., Terry Songer of Bradford and Richard (Carol) Songer of Little Valley, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Francis Brissee of Phoenix, Ariz.; three sisters, Rita Hensley of Hurricane, Utah, Patricia Todd of Lansdale, and Dora Pawlakowski of Lorain, Ohio; as well as many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Jeanine Todd, on Feb. 6, 2012; and four sisters, Margie Fritz, Ann, Jean Peterson and Dorothy Brissee.
Friends will be received from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Road, Olean, N.Y. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Friday in St. Bonaventure Church with the Rev. James Vacco, pastor, as Celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
