JOHNSONBURG - George Edward Launer, 82, Johnsonburg, passed away Saturday (Jan. 30, 2016) at Pinecrest Manor after a lengthy illness.
He was born March 23, 1933, in Johnsonburg, the son of the late Edward J. and Doris Annabel Nestlerode Launer. On Nov. 28, 1953, in Kane, he married Alice J. Maze Launer; she survives in Johnsonburg.
George is also survived by four children, Connie (Charles) Feronti of Johnsonburg, Wanda Huffman (David) Currence of York, S.C., Chris (Karen) Launer of Eagle River, Alaska, and unofficial adopted daughter, Peggy VanLuvender of Johnsonburg; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
George was a 1951 graduate of Johnsonburg High School and then attended Hirman C. Andrews of Johnstown, receiving a degree in drafting.
George was in the U.S. Army from 1953 until 1955 during the Korean Conflict, having served with the 2nd Infantry Division Combat Engineers.
George worked at the East Branch Dam, Smith Lumber Co. in Johnsonburg, Smith Motors in Johnsonburg and Carbon Graphite and Sintered Alloys in St. Marys as security. He retired Jan. 2, 2012.
George was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church, the Johnsonburg Fire Department for more than 55 years and also the fire police. He enjoyed hunting, woodworking and model trains.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Ubel Funeral Home in Johnsonburg. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Stephen Fair officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Johnsonburg Servicemen's Detail. Burial will follow in St. Johns Lutheran Cemetery in Johnsonburg.
