TONAWANDA, N.Y. - George A. Newman, age 83, of Tonawanda, unexpectedly and peacefully went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday (May 12, 2015) surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Bradford, Pa., on Feb. 20, 1932, the son of the late George and Leoan Watson Newman, he has been a resident of Tonawanda for the past 60 years.
George was employed as an electrician at Tonawanda Iron Works and then at Gibraltar Steel for over 45 years, retiring in 1999. He has been a member and church elder of the Tonawanda Free Methodist Church for the past 50 years and served on the Board of Trustees for many, many years.
George was also a decorated Army Veteran of the Korean War.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, winters in Florida with his sister, summers working on the family cottage at LCC, and the company of his extended family, the staff and patrons at Athena's Restaurant, especially Susie, Joannie and all the girls, their love and friendship meant the world to him.
The loving husband of the late Marion M. Newman, George had the support of many other family members during his life, including his children, George (Sandy) Newman, Timothy (Michele) Newman, Thomas (Kerrie-Ann) Newman, and the late Daniel, Diane and Robert Newman; grandchildren Mindy, TJ, Kayli Ann, Keenan, great-grandchild AnnaBella and the cherished significant others of his grandchildren James, Lillie and Jeannine; his brothers, Art (Laura) Newman, Harold (Carol) Newman; sisters, Jeannine (the late Emmett) Keller, Nancy (Paul) Cropsey and the late Faith Bello; his brothers and sisters-in-law, the late Clifford (Roberta) Conner, Paul (Mary) Conner, Sandra (the late Bill) Good, the late Edna and (Lyle) Sullivan, the late Betty and (Ralph) Johnston, the late Margaret (Clarence) Barrett, the late Andrew "Bud" Conner, August Conner, Alberta (Hank) Cohn; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at John O. Roth Funeral Home Inc., 25 William St., in Tonawanda. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Tonawanda Free Methodist Church, 207 Grove St. Pastor Donald Mohr will officiate. Burial will be in Acacia Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in his memory may be made to the Tonawanda Free Methodist Church.
