ELDRED –– J. Richard "Dick" Shay ll, 67, passed away on Sunday (July 1, 2018) at his residence following an apparent heart attack.
Born on April 9, 1951, in Olean, N.Y., he was a son of John R. "Crow" and Mary Catherine "Cad" Frampton Shay. On Nov. 27, 1971, in the St. Raphael's Church in Eldred he married Susan R. Karl, who passed away on Nov. 27, 2008.
Dick was a 1969 graduate of Otto-Eldred High School and had been a lifetime resident of Eldred. He had been employed at Consolidated Freightways in Olean as a truck driver, in the bakery at Stroehmann's in Olean, at Fibercel Packaging in Portville, Zippo Manufacturing in Bradford and for 25 years prior to his retirement he was employed by Alcas/Cutco in Olean in the mechanical maintenance department. Dick, or the "Beast" as he was known by his friends, had also driven bus for Todd's Busses in Eldred. For many years he had owned and operated Dick's Guns in Eldred.
He was a member and past secretary of the Eldred Fire Department and a member of the Eldred Conservation Club and the Silhouette Club. Dick was an avid outdoorsman and competitive marksman. He enjoyed attending auctions and gun shows and making people laugh. In the past he had enjoyed gardening with Susan, and he had a passion for cars and antiques.
Surviving, in addition to his father of Eldred, are a son, Michael (Mary Katherine) Shay of New Castle; a daughter, Sarah (Michael Hunter) Shay of Oak Grove, Ore.; three grandchildren, Reagan, Elias and Grady Shay; a brother, Randy (Kim) Shay of Eldred; two sisters, Becky (Bill) Bailey of Sturgis, Mich., and Mary Shay of Eldred; an uncle, Bill Frampton of Tulsa, Okla.; an aunt, Nancy (Jack) Gilfert of Eldred; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to a celebration of life on Saturday at the Eldred Borough Fire Department from 1 to 3 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Eldred Borough Fire Department or the ambulance fund.
