ELDRED - Karl Edward Hakes, 71, of Indian Creek Road, passed away Wednesday (Sept. 19, 2012) at his home following a long illness.
Born July 8, 1941, in Olean, N.Y., he was a son of Herman and Thelma Elizabeth Ellis Miles.  He was later adopted by Ivan Merle Hakes. On May 28, 1960, at the Bethel Assembly of God in Olean he married Luella Jean Campbell, who survives.
Karl was a 1960 graduate of Otto-Eldred High School and had lived most of his life in Eldred.
He was employed by W.T. Grant Co. in Olean and Paul's Steakhouse in Allegany, N.Y.; later he worked for over 30 years as a distributor driver for Allied Bitumeus which later became Alle-Catt Asphalt which later became Midland Asphalt in Allegany, retiring in 2009.
Mr. Hakes was a faithful attender of the Eldred United Methodist Church since 2006 when he committed his life to Jesus Christ. He was a past Boy Scout Weblos leader in Eldred, a  member and past governor of the Port Allegany Moose Lodge 460, a member of the Olean Eagles 616, a social member of the Eldred American Legion Post 887, and a member of the St. Bonaventure Golf Club until he was unable to play due to ill health, as well as a past member of the Olean YMCA.
He loved golf, fishing, playing cards and playing the game "Aggravation".
Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter, Nina Carol (Wayne) Sozansky of Greentown, Ind.; a daughter-in-law, Rebecca Foley Hakes of Eldred; six grandchildren, Joshua Iva Hakes, Jeanie Marie Sozansky, Katherine Michelle Sozansky, Sierra Nicole Hakes, Sheldon Marcus Foley and Collin Ray Hakes; one great-grandson, Brayden Thomas Hakes; a brother, William Melvin Miles of Olean; a stepbrother, Paul (Sue) Kriner of Eldred; four half-sisters, Madelyn Miles Dean and Margaret Miles Horton, both of Belmont, Gail (Dan Wolfe) Hakes Kriner of Erie, and Dawn Marie Kriner (Gary) Worrell of Cheswick; two stepsisters, Mary Ann Kriner (Rex) Stalkner in West Virginia, Betty Sue Kriner (Tom) Bean of Shinglehouse; a stepsister-in-law, Melissa Kriner of Acworth, Ga.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sons, infant William Joseph Hakes in 1964 and Ivan Merle Hakes in 2005; and a stepbrother, Carl Edward Kriner in 2010.
Friends may call Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Frame Funeral Home in Eldred, and on Saturday at the Eldred United Methodist Church from 10 to 11 a.m., at which time funeral and committal services will be held with the Rev. Ron Emery officiating. Burial will be in Lamphier Cemetery, Eldred.
The Port Allegany Moose Lodge 460 will conduct a service of tribute at 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Eldred United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or their Jonathan Fund; the Roswell Park Cancer Institute or the Olean YMCA.
