Kenneth M. Johnson, 89, of Smethport, formerly of Clermont, passed away on Sunday (Oct. 13, 2013) at the Lakeview Senior Care and Living Center, Smethport.
He was born on Sept. 11, 1924, in Cyclone, a son of the late Edwin and Nina Cheeseman Johnson. On April 24, 1948, he married Charlotte Fern of Cyclone, who survives.
Mr. Johnson attended grade school in Cyclone and graduated from Bradford Area High School in 1942. He entered the U.S. Army in March 1943 and served in the European Theatre of Operations with the 556th Anti-Aircraft Battalion as a machine gunner. While serving, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He then served in the Army Reserves and the National Guard until January 1961, at which time he was honorably discharged as a master sergeant.
He was employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in Clearfield as a construction inspector and a permits inspector from 1963 until his retirement in 1990.
In addition to his wife of 65 years, Charlotte Johnson of Smethport, he is also survived by three sons, David (Sally) Johnson and Daniel (Shelby) Johnson, both of Smethport, and Robert (Erin) Johnson of Hazel Hurst; three daughters, Bonita (Paul) Kiser of Manassas, Va., Gloria Lloyd of Pittsburgh and Tina (Leon) Diehl of Jim Thorpe; one brother, Elton (Joanne) Johnson of Cyclone; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one daughter, Marlene Mack; one sister, Artis Pais; and three brothers, Clifford Johnson, Ronald Johnson and Rex Johnson.
At the family's request, there will be no visitation. Friends are invited to attend graveside military honors at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Clermont Cemetery.
The family has asked that memorial contributions in his memory be made to the Eldred World War II Museum, 201 Main St., Eldred, PA 16731.
