Lawrence Silvis Obituary

STONEBORO - Lawrence T. "Larry" Silvis, 63, of Sandy Lake, passed away Friday morning (May 4, 2012) in UPMC/Seneca following a brief illness.
Born May 22, 1948, in Olean, N.Y., he was a son of Richard R. and Carol E. Everitt Silvis.
He was a graduate of Otto-Eldred High School. He then graduated from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a degree in criminal justice. He received his master's degree from Edinboro State University.
Larry retired in 2008 after serving 14 years as a Mercer County District Justice in Grove City. Larry had more than 29 years in state law enforcement, starting out as a state policeman for 11 years and then working as director of public safety for five years at Penn State, Erie, the Behrend College, before his appointment as judge.
In between state jobs, Larry was the director of police safety at Allegheny College, Meadville, for 8 years. He also worked for a short time as a criminal investigator with Allegheny County Power Systems, Greensburg. He was also an adjunct faculty member at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Mercyhurst College, Erie.
He was of the Protestant faith.
He had been a member of Stoneboro Lion's Club and was a member of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association.
Larry was an Eagle Scout and had always stayed active with the Boy Scouts as a leader. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family. He also enjoyed woodworking and building things for his grandchildren; they were the joy of his life. 
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
On Feb. 10, 1972, he married Janet L. Clayton, who survives. Also surviving are a son Dr. Brian F. (Dr. Kate) Silvis of Harmony; two grandchildren, Phillip Lawrence Silvis and Clara Janet Silvis, both of Harmony; his parents of Duke Center; two sisters, Barbara (Randy) Evans of Emerald Isle, N.C., and Cheryl (Jim) Eaton of Warren; two brothers, Gary (Coleen) Silvis and David Silvis, all of Duke Center.
Visitors may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday at the Oak Grove Church, 10 Oak Grove Road, Mercer.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in the church with the Rev. William N. Ewing, lay pastor, officiating.
Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Sandy Lake Township.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to French Creek Council of Boy Scouts of America, 1815 Robison Road West, Erie, PA 16501.
Arrangements are by the Scott A. Black Funeral Home, 99 Franklin St., Stoneboro.
