AUSTIN - Leon R. Bundy Sr., 83, a lifelong resident of Austin, passed away with his loving family at his side on Tuesday (Oct. 14, 2014) in UPMC Hamot, Erie, after a short illness.
Born May 16, 1931 in Austin, he was a son of Fred and Elma Snyder Bundy. On April 16, 1977 in Austin, he married Eliza J. Woodworth, who survives.
Leon attended Odin Country School, Keating Summit Country School, Austin school, and Coudersport school.
He was employed at the former County Home in Coudersport and at McCloskey Saw Mill in Austin. He then worked as an attendant at Buffalo State Hospital and then by Penn Krest Stone Quarry, in Austin. He was also was employed for Rees Trucking Company in Austin as a truck driver. For a period of time he ran a white washing business. He then was employed by Ingram Trucking of Weedville as a truck driver and later by St. Mary's Transfer as a truck driver and mechanic and then by Eckert Construction based out of Galeton. Leon retired on Dec. 31, 2007 from his own business which was a recycling business known by everyone in the area as "Bundy's Mall".
He was a member of the Austin Free Methodist Church and a member of the Coudersport Senior Center. He enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, and had started growing grapes in 2007. He enjoyed working in recycling and had a great knowledge of metals. His greatest love was his family.
Surviving besides his wife are seven children, Keith Bundy of Niagara Falls, N.Y., Leon Robert "Bobby" (Lee) Bundy Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va., Sheryl Johnson in Michigan, Garry M. (Dawn) Bacon of Austin, Vicki L. (Mark) Mahon of Danville, Ind., Sandra K. (Bill) Witwer of Melville, Mont., and Randy S. (Angela) Bacon of Chesapeake, Va.; many grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Lannager of Bolivar, N.Y. and Esther Primeau of Ocala, Fla.; a brother, Michael Bundy of Shinglehouse; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Leon was predeceased by a son, Otto Dan "Danny" Bacon III; a sister, Louise Hurlburt; and two brothers, Stanley Bundy and Norman Bundy.
Friends may call at the Austin Free Methodist Church on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., at which time a memorial service will follow with the Rev. Roger Laktash, pastor, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Austin Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 328, Austin, PA 16720 or to the Austin Free Methodist Church, Costello Avenue, Austin, PA 16720.
