COUDERSPORT - Loretta J. Berger, 83, of Coudersport, passed away on Saturday (April 18, 2015) at Sweden Valley Manor, where she had been a resident for the previous eight months.
Loretta (Lorrie to her friends) was born March 20, 1932, in Coudersport to Ralph M. Johnson Sr. and Doris Boyd Johnson. She graduated from West Chester University with a degree in music education in 1954. In 1955 she married James D. Berger of Coudersport, and they remained devoted to each other for 60 years.
Loretta had a gift for music and throughout her life she shared it generously with her community. She was the choir director at Park United Methodist Church for 40 years. She founded and directed the Coudersport Community Chorus, bringing together a group of talented voices that brightened the local area for many years. She was a member of Eastern Star and served as their organist, and she also directed rehearsals for the Passion Play Chorus. She was a longtime volunteer with Meals on Wheels and Sweden Valley Manor. As well as being a talented musician, Loretta enjoyed the outdoors, loved books, and was an exceptionally kind and gracious person with a gentle wit who buoyed all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband, James D. Berger of Coudersport; son, James J. (Carole) Berger of Falls Creek; daughter Diana (Scott) Rupp of Torrance, Calif.; brother Eric Johnson of Acton, Mass.; sister Sigrid Wilkinson of Athens, Pa.; grandson, Christopher Berger of Falls Creek; numerous cousins, including Karen Nagengast of Coudersport; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Ralph Johnson Jr.; and a son, Tom.
A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Fickinger Funeral Home in Coudersport, and a funeral service will be held there at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Burial will follow in Eulalia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Eulalia Cemetery Association or Park United Methodist Church.
